PowerupStackMinecraft Realms is Mojang's subscription-based hosting service. There is no permanently free Realms plan, although eligible players may receive a trial. PowerupStack's free tier is an alternative for playing online without a recurring subscription, especially if you want plugins, mods, or direct access to your server files.

Realms and PowerupStack's free tier both conserve resources while a server is empty. Neither server needs to run
continuously: it starts when a player connects and shuts down again after the session. On PowerupStack, automatic
startup when a player joins is available for Java and Bedrock Edition, and shutdown occurs five minutes after the final player
leaves. Java Edition players connect without entering a port because the PowerupStack address uses a DNS SRV record.
Bedrock Edition does not support SRV records, so its players must enter the assigned server port shown in the panel
rather than assuming the default 19132 port.
The storage figures are not an exact like-for-like comparison. PowerupStack's 4 GB limit covers the entire server. Realms has edition- and plan-specific limits: the Minecraft Wiki records a 5 GB Java world-upload limit, while Bedrock Realms currently provides 5 GB of manual-save storage with Core and 10 GB with Plus. Realms can also hold up to three world slots, with one active at a time.
Vanilla, plugins, mods, and packs
Realms runs Mojang's Vanilla server software. You cannot replace it with software such as Paper, Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge, so server plugins and mods are not supported. Realms does support Vanilla customization:
- Java Edition: data packs
- Bedrock Edition: behavior packs and add-ons
PowerupStack lets you choose supported server software and install approved plugins or mods from the workshop. This makes the free tier a better fit when you want features that Vanilla Minecraft cannot provide.
Adding data packs and behavior packs
On PowerupStack, you can upload a Java data pack or Bedrock behavior pack directly to the appropriate server folder. You do not need to transfer the entire world just to add the pack.
With Realms, applying your own pack can involve a longer workflow:
- Download the Realm world to your device.
- Add and enable the data pack or behavior pack locally.
- Upload the modified world to the Realm.
This difference becomes more noticeable when you test or update packs frequently.
Which option should you choose?
Choose Minecraft Realms when you want the simplest official Vanilla experience, prefer managing the server inside Minecraft, and do not need plugins, mods, or alternative server software.
Choose PowerupStack's free tier when you want more control, direct pack uploads, supported plugins or mods, and up to 4 GB of total server storage without a recurring subscription.
